Introducing our artist

‘ Ella Gillespie’

Evans Head – New South Wales – Australia

Ella is a proud 14-year-old Indigenous girl of the Awabakal nation who has been painting & drawing for as long as she can remember.  Her art is inspired by Mother Nature, wildlife, her culture & her love of bright colours.

Moving to the Northern Rivers at a young age was a life changing experience for Ella. Living in a beautiful environment, surrounded by the natural colours & shapes of the landscape & the local marine & wildlife has influenced the story & colour palette of her artwork. Ella’s connection to Aboriginal culture can be seen throughout her creative process as she incorporates experiences of the bush, yarning & learning about culture.

Travelling Whales – painting – by Ella

This artwork is my interpretation of the east coast humpback whale migration. The white lines represent whales & their calves and the dots represent spouting & breaching whales.

by Ella’s Mum

Ella has been wearing an Art smock for as long as I can remember, she has always been passionate about painting & drawing and we could tell early on that she had a natural eye for using colours. We moved to Evans Head 3 years ago & the beauty of the surroundings, along with learning more about her culture through her AEO at school and programs like AIME was a natural progression for her in her art.

Ella started the ‘Travelling Whales’ using different colours that she found in her natural environment, mixing shades until she felt it best reflected how she viewed the ocean, land etc as we live on the coast. Throw in the annual whale migration along our shore line & it all came together as they track their way through her painting.
